The Effect of Pituitrin Injection on the Water Balance of Bufo Regularis Reuss

چکیده

In 1921, Brunn showed that injection of neurohypophysial extracts causes a temporary increase in the body water content of Amphibia kept in water. Since then the existence of this water-balance effect has been confirmed by numerous workers, but its mechanism is by no means fully understood. The increase in body water following pituitrin injection might be due either to an increased rate of water uptake through the skin, or to a decreased rate of elimination of water through the kidneys, or to a combination of the two. Each type of effect has been claimed to have been demonstrated by various workers, but many of the experiments are open to criticism. It is convenient to consider separately the evidence for the existence of the two mechanisms. (1) Increased water uptake

The Effects of Posterior Pituitary Extracts on Water Balance in Bufo Carens and Xenopus Laevis, Together with Some General Con- Siderations of Anuran Water Economy

In a previous communication (Ewer, 1951) it was noted that in both Bufo regularis and B. bufo pitressin has a greater water-balance effect than has pitocin, whereas in various species of Rana the reverse is the case. It was suggested that high pitressin sensitivity might be a characteristic of the genus Bufo, and that this might be correlated with the more terrestrial habit of toads, as compare...

The Response of the Water-regulating Mechanism of Developmental Stages of the Common Toad, Bufo Bufo Bufo (l.), to Treatment with Extracts of the Posterior Lobe of the Pituitary Body

INVESTIGATIONS made in recent years have demonstrated a connexion between the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland and water regulation in Amphibia. Injection of extracts causes a retention of water in the body of frogs (Brunn, 1921; Heller, 1930; Steggerda, 1931; Collin & Drouet, 1932; Steggerda & Essex, 1934; Oldham, 1936; Boyd & Brown, 1938; Boyd & Whyte, 1939), toads (Steggerda, 1931; Nove...

The stimulus for the water-balance response to dehydration in toads.

INTRODUCTION .2~IPHIBIANS that frequent terrestrial habitats typically respond to dehydration by decreasing rates of urinary water loss and increasing the rate at which water can be t~ken up through the skin. These effects, known as the water-balance response, are thought to be mediated by a neurohypophyseal hormone similar to the antidiuretic hormones of mammals (see Sawyer, 1956). The water-b...

Influence of nitric oxide on histamine and carbachol-induced gastric Acid secretion in the common african toad - bufo regularis.

The study aimed to determine the influence of nitric oxide (NO) on the action of histamine and carbachol on acid secretion in the common African toad - Bufo regularis. Gastric acidity was determined by titration method. The acid secretion was determined when nitric oxide was absent following administration of NO synthase inhibitor; N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) and when nitric oxide ...
